Mermaid Costumes - How to Make One Yourself

In this article you'll find lots of great tips and ideas on how you can create your own mermaid costume for your next fancy dress party. Whether it's a sexy siren dress for yourself or a cute little mermaid costume for your little daughter. Whether you can sew or you're a glue gun expert, there's something for all skill levels. Just have a read through and get some inspiration. Enjoy.

Personality:

Kids Toy Chest

Before you start making a mermaid costume, why not take a minute and think about what kind of mermaid you want to be?

Mermaids come in many kinds. Some turn into humans with legs when out of the water. Some need magic to do this and some mermaids that can perform magic themselves. Some are kind and some are evil sea witches. There's the enchanting siren luring sailors to their doom and the nice mermaid showing the local fisherman the best fishing grounds. Or there's the scary mermaid pulling everyone into the deep who dares to swim in their waters.

The point of dressing up is to become someone different, to take on the role of another character. The more familiar you are with this character, the more fun it will be. Once you decide on the personality of your mermaid, picking the right accessories and make-up will be much easier.

I recommend having a look at mermaid costumes or mermaid pictures as well. You might get some more inspiration for your own mermaid outfit.

The Fabric:

For the material you should decide on colors like blue, green, blue-green or purple as well as turquoise, browns and flashes of gold. Shimmery, shiny fabric like silk or satin always looks beautiful and "fishy". Sequined material gives the impression of scales.

The Top:

For this you can use a two-piece or one-piece bathing suit although even a short tank top can look very nice. You can decorate your top with seashells, a fishing net or other oceanic treasures. I trust your judgment in not gluing fresh seafood on yourself, but rather find some good imitations in a deco shop or a dollar store. It's great if your bra is already glittery or sequined but you can also cut out seashell or starfish shaped patterns from the fabric you use and sew them onto your cups. Or, if you're up for a little more work you can embellish it yourself with sequins, or rhinestones. If you dare you can also buy two fake seashells and make your own bra with some string.

The Tail:

The most important and most challenging part of making your mermaid costume is the tail. Here are some ideas: The easiest way would probably be to start with a straight skirt and add some extra fabric on either side at the bottom to create the shape of tail fins.

Another design is to make a tail extension that hangs down from the back of your skirt. It is a good idea to add a sleeve or loop at the and of the tail, which you can slip your wrist through when walking. This way the tail will not drag across the floor and no one will step on it.

A third idea I found, and which might be particularly good for children, is to have a broad skirt like a tutu and sew a tail shaped pattern on top of it. The skirt will be the the water or a rock, so you need to choose the appropriate material.

Even if you have no sewing experience at all you can make a short skirt yourself by wrapping the fabric of your choice tightly around your thighs and tucking the end into the back. With a basting stitch (simply Google basting stitch and you will know how it's done) sew another piece of (tail shaped) material to the top of your skirt and down to your knees letting it hang down on the ground.

It's not hard and you will find many ways to improve this garment. Once you have the basic shape it's all about adding detail like you did with the top. You can glue and stitch sequins on it or sew on more fins on the back and the sides. If you're good at sewing you can experiment with gathering stitches to create some kind of tail texture.

The Make-Up:

This again depends on your type of mermaid.

I would suggest light make up, a pale skin tone, watery colors. It's a nice idea to glue some sequins on your cheeks to mimic scales or put on some glitter give a wet effect. If you want to go more costumey, you can also paint a starfish on your cheek. Silver, grey, dark blue and green are again the colors of choice for eye shadow. And did you know there is mood nail polish? It changes color depending on your body temperature as long as you wear it. I think that might be a very mermaid thing to do. Another great idea is wearing contacts. Something bright that gives you a mystical look.

The Hair:

Long hair is a must of course. If yours is short, you might want to consider a wig. It doesn't have to be red, unless you want to be Disney's Little Mermaid Ariel. Any color will do, even turquoise, green or blue.

Have you thought about dread locks to mimic salt encrusted hair?

Accessories:

Depending on your type of mermaid you could carry a scepter, a wand or even a trident. Or how about a conch shell or a treasure chest instead of a purse? Hawaiian leis are a great addition and ocean themed accessories like a seashell hair clip with matching bracelets and earrings or a seashell-covered tiara. A simple pearl necklace also happens to be an oceanic accessory. Additionally you could get fake seaweed at the pet store and tangle it up in your hair. You can decorate sandals with seashells but if you're inside and you think it's save, the mermaid thing to do is, of course, to walk barefoot.

I hope this helped a little and at least you have some idea what you want to do with your mermaid costume now. I wish you tons of fun working on it. Remember you will look fantastic when it's done!

Re-Purpose Old Sweaters Into Adorable Felt Flower Pins

Make adorable felt flower pins from old outdated or tattered sweaters. You can use one of these flower pins almost anywhere. Pin one to your coat for a fresh look. Pin several to a sad looking fabric purse. Use them on hats and scarves. They are great for home decorating projects also. Put a row of them around the bottom of a bedroom lamp shade. Decorate pillows and throws. Add chenille stems, and put them in a vase.

Kids Toy Chest

What you will need:Two 100% wool sweaters in coordinating colors Lined notebook paper Pencil Scissors Needle Strong thread Straight pins 4 round objects in graduated sizes for patterns (approximate diameters are 1-5/8", 1-5/16", 15/16", and 11/16") Pin back
Step 1. Making the Patterns

Kids Toy Chest

The 4 round objects do not have to be the exact sizes given. Just make sure that the circles are decreasing in size. The objects used for our patterns were 2 caps from different vitamin bottles, a quarter, and a dime.

Repeat the following instructions 1 time with each of the 4 round objects so that you have 4 flower patterns:

Lay the lined notebook paper on a table with the lines perpendicular to yourself (in case you don't remember your geometry, you want the paper so that if the lines continued they would run right into your chest). Place the object on the paper near the edge closest to you, so that a line on the paper goes right through the middle of the object. Trace around the object creating your first circle. Place same object above drawn circle with bottom of object just touching top of drawn circle. Trace around object. Find area where your 2 drawn circles meet and mark a dot in the center. Move object to right of 2 drawn circles with left edge touching dot and object centered between 2 drawn circles. Trace around object. Repeat above step on left side of drawn circles. You should now have a flower with 4 petals. Cut out the flower pattern along outside lines.
Step 2. Wet Felting the Wool

Sweaters that are 100% wool tend to work best. It is possible to get good results with a little less percentage of wool,
so if you already have a sweater, give it a try. Less than 70% wool most likely will not felt.

Wash sweaters in hot water with detergent and no fabric softener, and then dry in clothes dryer on medium to high heat. The sweaters will shrink and the wool fibers will become entangled, locking together so that when cut they do not ravel.

As a side note I've read before that wool will not felt in a front loading washer. Some say that an agitator from a top loader is necessary to cause the wool fibers to mat. But I have had success in getting the wool to felt in my front loader. The only thing I havn't gotten to felt is cashmere.

Step 3. Making the Flower Pin

Pin patterns to felted wool. Use largest and next to smallest patterns on first wool color, and the other 2 patterns on second wool color. Cut around patterns.

Stack flowers from largest to smallest. Holding the 4 pieces of felt tightly in your hand, push threaded and knotted needle from back side of largest flower and continue straight through center of all flowers. Pull thread very tight.

Keeping thread tight, make several stitches back and forth through flower centers ending at the back. Knot thread.

Sew the pin back to the back of the flower.

G Spot - Hit the G-Spot Every Time!

You will learn here how to find the G-spot with your partner, and once finding it, use of a special sexual position to stimulate it, and bring her quickly to climax after climax (once you learn the technique).

Kids Toy Chest

To find the G-spot, you need to know what it is, where it is located, and how to identify it.

Kids Toy Chest

What is the G Spot

The G-spot is named after the German doctor (a gynecologist) Ernst Graftenburg.

It is an area inside the vagina, on its front wall.

When this area is stimulated with the correct pressure it often evokes an orgasm. You can locate it as it corresponds to the area where the urethra is nearest to the top of the vaginal wall. The urethra is the opening where a woman urinates.

Finding the G spot

There are several opinions to exactly where the G-spot is, and indeed it varies from woman to woman. You can be sure however that is somewhere from the urethral opening on to the termination of the vagina.

Using one or two fingers, insert them inside your partner's vagina, touching the top of the vaginal wall. You will feel a lattice-work of muscle tissue, and somewhere in that lattice is the real G-spot. Be very careful how you touch it. Too little pressure and your partner will feel nothing. Too much pressure and she will experience an unpleasant pain.

pleasuring the G Spot

Once you have located it, you have three methods to employ it to pleasure your partner.

The first method is while performing cunnilingus re-insert two fingers and apply a steady and firm (but not rough) pressure to the G-spot. After about 20 minutes of cunnilingus, and pressure, your partner should experience a steady and strong orgasm.

The second method is by intercourse, with the man laying on his back and woman mounted on top. The man needs do nothing at all, just have an erection and let the woman move and she will press her own G-spot against the man's penis. Orgasm is assured.

The third method is a sexual position known as Kneel and Heels. The woman lays on her back, with the man sitting on his thighs in front of her.

The woman will place her heels on the man's chest with her legs slightly apart. The man then penetrates the woman, and does not move or thrust, but rather leans back a bit, insuring his penis is firmly touching the vaginal wall.

The woman rather wiggles and undulates. The man's penis will be in an upward tilt and pressing against the G-spot. After some minutes, the woman will experience a strong orgasm, as the same position also stimulates the clitoris.

It must be remembered that to stimulate the G-spot one must apply both intense and constant local pressure in unison.

The man simply thrusting is not effective in this case. I

If the man can hold on long enough, his partner will experience an orgasm that is both deep and long-lasting.

An interesting variation in sexual position is known as the Horse position.

The woman is lying down on her back with the man standing. Again her heels are pressed to the man's chest, and he can penetrate and instead of trusting, he simply moves with his penis fully inserted into the vagina.

The experienced man can understand where the G-spot is, and a firm and constant pressure brings the desired result.

2 Sewing Techniques On How To Sew A Reversible Vest

Here are two sewing techniques plus some good sewing tips on how to sew a reversible vest or a lined vest. One is stitched and turned; the other is stitched and bound.

Kids Toy Chest

Try both to help you determine your favorite sewing technique.

Kids Toy Chest

For both methods, follow these cutting and sewing instructions:

Choose similar weight fabrics for a reversible vest.

Preshrink all fabrics and interfacing.

Interface the vest with a fusible knit interfacing.

Test the interfacing on a scrap of fabric first to make sure it will be OK.

Depending on the fabric, you may choose to interface both of the fronts and back of the vest.

Note: You may want to interface the fabric and then cut the vest pieces out of the interfaced fabric.

Carefully cut two fronts and one back from each fabric.

Make sure the front and back vest pieces are the same size in both fabrics after you cut them out. Lay one over the other to check it.

Apply any pockets or designs to each front and back layer.

For each layer:

Place right sides of the fabric together and stitch the front and back shoulder seams together. Do NOT backstitch.

Instead begin and end each seam with short stitches (18-20 per inch) for about 1 to 1-1/2 inches.

Sandwich press the seams.

Press the seams open.

At the neck and shoulder point of the shoulder seam, trim the shoulder seam allowance back at an angle for about 1-1/2 inch to eliminate bulk when the neck and armhole seams are made.

Also trim the shoulder seams of one of the layers to be just slightly less than the other layer to stagger or grade the seams when they lay on top of each other.

Continue with either Method I or Method II to finish the vest.

Method I - How To Sew To Complete A Stitched And Turned Reversible Vest

Place the two vests right sides together.

Note: Generally, when sewing a lined vest, it is a good idea to trim off about 1/8 inch from the lining before attaching it to the outer layer. This keeps the lining from showing on the outside when the vest is worn.

For a reversible vest, you may or may not want to do this.

If a bit of one of the layers shows on one of the sides, it may look like narrow piping. You are the designer. Create the look you want.

Stitch the vests armhole edges together using short stitches (18-20 stitches per inch) all the way.

Sandwich press these seams.

Press the seams open.

Trim the armhole seams to 1/8 inch seam allowance. The short stitches will hold this seam.

If this is a lined vest, understitch the armhole seams and all of the other seams as well. If it is reversible, you may not want the understitching to show on the edge.

Sewing Tip: Always use short stitches and trim to 1/8 inch seam allowance to stitch a curve. Then understitch if possible. It produces a much cleaner, sharper curve instead of trimming to 1/4 inch and clipping. Try it!

After the armholes are finished, place the two right sides of the vest back together again lining up all the edges. Pin to hold the layers.

Stitch the front and neckline together.

Begin stitching about 2 inches from the side seam on the bottom of the front and stitch across the bottom of the front, up the center front and around the neck and down on the other side of the front stopping about 2 inches from the other side seam.

Use a regular stitch length to stitch across the bottom of the front and up the front. Change to a short stitch length to stitch the curve around the neck.

Sandwich press the seam.

Press the seam open.

Trim the curved area around the neck to 1/8 inch.

Trim the rest of the seam to 1/4 inch.

Hold the scissors at an angle when you trim to help layer or grade the seam allowances or use "duckbill" scissors to help do this.

Sewing Tip: Always stagger the edges of seam allowances when they end up laying on top of each other in a finished garment.

Turn the vest right side out by pulling the fronts through the shoulders one side at a time.

Press well setting the seam lines exactly on the edge.

With right sides together, match the armhole seams and pin exactly through the stitching line to hold one on top of the other.

Stitch the side seams of both layers in one continuous step carefully walking the needle over the underarm pin.

Sandwich press the seam.

Press the seam open.

You may want to leave the full seam allowance here in case you have to let the vest out sometime.

Now, you have the bottom of the back open and about 2 inches on either side of the side seam toward the front.

Turn right sides together matching up the side seams. Put a pin exactly in the line of stitching in the side seams to hold one on top of the other.

Starting at one front side where you stopped stitching previously, stitch across the bottom until you come to about 2 inches from the next side seam pin and stop leaving about a 4 inch opening on that side.

Sandwich press the seam.

Press the seam open.

Press under the unstitched seam allowances as though they were stitched.

Trim and grade the seam allowances to about 1/4 inch.

Turn the vest right side out through the 4 inch opening at the side lower edge. This opening is better than having the opening in the middle of the center back. It isn't as noticeable.

Press well again.

At the opening, turn in and line up the edges.

To finish this opening, slip stitch it closed by hand or place a narrow strip of fusible web and fuse it closed.

If desired, topstitch the vest 1/4 inch from the edges.

Make buttonholes on both sides of the vest.

Sew 2 buttons together making a thread shank in between them. Use these double buttons through both buttonholes like cuff links. You can even use 2 different buttons as
long as they are the same size to fit through the holes.

Method II

Another method to finish your reversible vest is to sew each vest with shoulder seams and side seams.

Place the vests with wrong sides together.

Stitch 3/4 inch all around the armholes and the outer edges of the vest holding the 2 layers together.

Trim off 5/8 inch all around.

Bind all the outside edges either with self fabric, contrasting fabric, or a fold over trim or braid to finish. You can even use a decorative serged edge to finish the vest.

This is fast and easy!

It's your choice. You are the designer!

Enjoy your vest!

It just makes sense!
