Mermaid Costumes - How to Make One Yourself

In this article you'll find lots of great tips and ideas on how you can create your own mermaid costume for your next fancy dress party. Whether it's a sexy siren dress for yourself or a cute little mermaid costume for your little daughter. Whether you can sew or you're a glue gun expert, there's something for all skill levels. Just have a read through and get some inspiration. Enjoy.

Personality:

Kids Toy Chest

Before you start making a mermaid costume, why not take a minute and think about what kind of mermaid you want to be?

Mermaids come in many kinds. Some turn into humans with legs when out of the water. Some need magic to do this and some mermaids that can perform magic themselves. Some are kind and some are evil sea witches. There's the enchanting siren luring sailors to their doom and the nice mermaid showing the local fisherman the best fishing grounds. Or there's the scary mermaid pulling everyone into the deep who dares to swim in their waters.

The point of dressing up is to become someone different, to take on the role of another character. The more familiar you are with this character, the more fun it will be. Once you decide on the personality of your mermaid, picking the right accessories and make-up will be much easier.

I recommend having a look at mermaid costumes or mermaid pictures as well. You might get some more inspiration for your own mermaid outfit.

The Fabric:

For the material you should decide on colors like blue, green, blue-green or purple as well as turquoise, browns and flashes of gold. Shimmery, shiny fabric like silk or satin always looks beautiful and "fishy". Sequined material gives the impression of scales.

The Top:

For this you can use a two-piece or one-piece bathing suit although even a short tank top can look very nice. You can decorate your top with seashells, a fishing net or other oceanic treasures. I trust your judgment in not gluing fresh seafood on yourself, but rather find some good imitations in a deco shop or a dollar store. It's great if your bra is already glittery or sequined but you can also cut out seashell or starfish shaped patterns from the fabric you use and sew them onto your cups. Or, if you're up for a little more work you can embellish it yourself with sequins, or rhinestones. If you dare you can also buy two fake seashells and make your own bra with some string.

The Tail:

The most important and most challenging part of making your mermaid costume is the tail. Here are some ideas: The easiest way would probably be to start with a straight skirt and add some extra fabric on either side at the bottom to create the shape of tail fins.

Another design is to make a tail extension that hangs down from the back of your skirt. It is a good idea to add a sleeve or loop at the and of the tail, which you can slip your wrist through when walking. This way the tail will not drag across the floor and no one will step on it.

A third idea I found, and which might be particularly good for children, is to have a broad skirt like a tutu and sew a tail shaped pattern on top of it. The skirt will be the the water or a rock, so you need to choose the appropriate material.

Even if you have no sewing experience at all you can make a short skirt yourself by wrapping the fabric of your choice tightly around your thighs and tucking the end into the back. With a basting stitch (simply Google basting stitch and you will know how it's done) sew another piece of (tail shaped) material to the top of your skirt and down to your knees letting it hang down on the ground.

It's not hard and you will find many ways to improve this garment. Once you have the basic shape it's all about adding detail like you did with the top. You can glue and stitch sequins on it or sew on more fins on the back and the sides. If you're good at sewing you can experiment with gathering stitches to create some kind of tail texture.

The Make-Up:

This again depends on your type of mermaid.

I would suggest light make up, a pale skin tone, watery colors. It's a nice idea to glue some sequins on your cheeks to mimic scales or put on some glitter give a wet effect. If you want to go more costumey, you can also paint a starfish on your cheek. Silver, grey, dark blue and green are again the colors of choice for eye shadow. And did you know there is mood nail polish? It changes color depending on your body temperature as long as you wear it. I think that might be a very mermaid thing to do. Another great idea is wearing contacts. Something bright that gives you a mystical look.

The Hair:

Long hair is a must of course. If yours is short, you might want to consider a wig. It doesn't have to be red, unless you want to be Disney's Little Mermaid Ariel. Any color will do, even turquoise, green or blue.

Have you thought about dread locks to mimic salt encrusted hair?

Accessories:

Depending on your type of mermaid you could carry a scepter, a wand or even a trident. Or how about a conch shell or a treasure chest instead of a purse? Hawaiian leis are a great addition and ocean themed accessories like a seashell hair clip with matching bracelets and earrings or a seashell-covered tiara. A simple pearl necklace also happens to be an oceanic accessory. Additionally you could get fake seaweed at the pet store and tangle it up in your hair. You can decorate sandals with seashells but if you're inside and you think it's save, the mermaid thing to do is, of course, to walk barefoot.

I hope this helped a little and at least you have some idea what you want to do with your mermaid costume now. I wish you tons of fun working on it. Remember you will look fantastic when it's done!

Re-Purpose Old Sweaters Into Adorable Felt Flower Pins

Make adorable felt flower pins from old outdated or tattered sweaters. You can use one of these flower pins almost anywhere. Pin one to your coat for a fresh look. Pin several to a sad looking fabric purse. Use them on hats and scarves. They are great for home decorating projects also. Put a row of them around the bottom of a bedroom lamp shade. Decorate pillows and throws. Add chenille stems, and put them in a vase.

Kids Toy Chest

What you will need:Two 100% wool sweaters in coordinating colors Lined notebook paper Pencil Scissors Needle Strong thread Straight pins 4 round objects in graduated sizes for patterns (approximate diameters are 1-5/8", 1-5/16", 15/16", and 11/16") Pin back
Step 1. Making the Patterns

Kids Toy Chest

The 4 round objects do not have to be the exact sizes given. Just make sure that the circles are decreasing in size. The objects used for our patterns were 2 caps from different vitamin bottles, a quarter, and a dime.

Repeat the following instructions 1 time with each of the 4 round objects so that you have 4 flower patterns:

Lay the lined notebook paper on a table with the lines perpendicular to yourself (in case you don't remember your geometry, you want the paper so that if the lines continued they would run right into your chest). Place the object on the paper near the edge closest to you, so that a line on the paper goes right through the middle of the object. Trace around the object creating your first circle. Place same object above drawn circle with bottom of object just touching top of drawn circle. Trace around object. Find area where your 2 drawn circles meet and mark a dot in the center. Move object to right of 2 drawn circles with left edge touching dot and object centered between 2 drawn circles. Trace around object. Repeat above step on left side of drawn circles. You should now have a flower with 4 petals. Cut out the flower pattern along outside lines.
Step 2. Wet Felting the Wool

Sweaters that are 100% wool tend to work best. It is possible to get good results with a little less percentage of wool,
so if you already have a sweater, give it a try. Less than 70% wool most likely will not felt.

Wash sweaters in hot water with detergent and no fabric softener, and then dry in clothes dryer on medium to high heat. The sweaters will shrink and the wool fibers will become entangled, locking together so that when cut they do not ravel.

As a side note I've read before that wool will not felt in a front loading washer. Some say that an agitator from a top loader is necessary to cause the wool fibers to mat. But I have had success in getting the wool to felt in my front loader. The only thing I havn't gotten to felt is cashmere.

Step 3. Making the Flower Pin

Pin patterns to felted wool. Use largest and next to smallest patterns on first wool color, and the other 2 patterns on second wool color. Cut around patterns.

Stack flowers from largest to smallest. Holding the 4 pieces of felt tightly in your hand, push threaded and knotted needle from back side of largest flower and continue straight through center of all flowers. Pull thread very tight.

Keeping thread tight, make several stitches back and forth through flower centers ending at the back. Knot thread.

Sew the pin back to the back of the flower.

G Spot - Hit the G-Spot Every Time!

You will learn here how to find the G-spot with your partner, and once finding it, use of a special sexual position to stimulate it, and bring her quickly to climax after climax (once you learn the technique).

Kids Toy Chest

To find the G-spot, you need to know what it is, where it is located, and how to identify it.

Kids Toy Chest

What is the G Spot

The G-spot is named after the German doctor (a gynecologist) Ernst Graftenburg.

It is an area inside the vagina, on its front wall.

When this area is stimulated with the correct pressure it often evokes an orgasm. You can locate it as it corresponds to the area where the urethra is nearest to the top of the vaginal wall. The urethra is the opening where a woman urinates.

Finding the G spot

There are several opinions to exactly where the G-spot is, and indeed it varies from woman to woman. You can be sure however that is somewhere from the urethral opening on to the termination of the vagina.

Using one or two fingers, insert them inside your partner's vagina, touching the top of the vaginal wall. You will feel a lattice-work of muscle tissue, and somewhere in that lattice is the real G-spot. Be very careful how you touch it. Too little pressure and your partner will feel nothing. Too much pressure and she will experience an unpleasant pain.

pleasuring the G Spot

Once you have located it, you have three methods to employ it to pleasure your partner.

The first method is while performing cunnilingus re-insert two fingers and apply a steady and firm (but not rough) pressure to the G-spot. After about 20 minutes of cunnilingus, and pressure, your partner should experience a steady and strong orgasm.

The second method is by intercourse, with the man laying on his back and woman mounted on top. The man needs do nothing at all, just have an erection and let the woman move and she will press her own G-spot against the man's penis. Orgasm is assured.

The third method is a sexual position known as Kneel and Heels. The woman lays on her back, with the man sitting on his thighs in front of her.

The woman will place her heels on the man's chest with her legs slightly apart. The man then penetrates the woman, and does not move or thrust, but rather leans back a bit, insuring his penis is firmly touching the vaginal wall.

The woman rather wiggles and undulates. The man's penis will be in an upward tilt and pressing against the G-spot. After some minutes, the woman will experience a strong orgasm, as the same position also stimulates the clitoris.

It must be remembered that to stimulate the G-spot one must apply both intense and constant local pressure in unison.

The man simply thrusting is not effective in this case. I

If the man can hold on long enough, his partner will experience an orgasm that is both deep and long-lasting.

An interesting variation in sexual position is known as the Horse position.

The woman is lying down on her back with the man standing. Again her heels are pressed to the man's chest, and he can penetrate and instead of trusting, he simply moves with his penis fully inserted into the vagina.

The experienced man can understand where the G-spot is, and a firm and constant pressure brings the desired result.

2 Sewing Techniques On How To Sew A Reversible Vest

Here are two sewing techniques plus some good sewing tips on how to sew a reversible vest or a lined vest. One is stitched and turned; the other is stitched and bound.

Kids Toy Chest

Try both to help you determine your favorite sewing technique.

Kids Toy Chest

For both methods, follow these cutting and sewing instructions:

Choose similar weight fabrics for a reversible vest.

Preshrink all fabrics and interfacing.

Interface the vest with a fusible knit interfacing.

Test the interfacing on a scrap of fabric first to make sure it will be OK.

Depending on the fabric, you may choose to interface both of the fronts and back of the vest.

Note: You may want to interface the fabric and then cut the vest pieces out of the interfaced fabric.

Carefully cut two fronts and one back from each fabric.

Make sure the front and back vest pieces are the same size in both fabrics after you cut them out. Lay one over the other to check it.

Apply any pockets or designs to each front and back layer.

For each layer:

Place right sides of the fabric together and stitch the front and back shoulder seams together. Do NOT backstitch.

Instead begin and end each seam with short stitches (18-20 per inch) for about 1 to 1-1/2 inches.

Sandwich press the seams.

Press the seams open.

At the neck and shoulder point of the shoulder seam, trim the shoulder seam allowance back at an angle for about 1-1/2 inch to eliminate bulk when the neck and armhole seams are made.

Also trim the shoulder seams of one of the layers to be just slightly less than the other layer to stagger or grade the seams when they lay on top of each other.

Continue with either Method I or Method II to finish the vest.

Method I - How To Sew To Complete A Stitched And Turned Reversible Vest

Place the two vests right sides together.

Note: Generally, when sewing a lined vest, it is a good idea to trim off about 1/8 inch from the lining before attaching it to the outer layer. This keeps the lining from showing on the outside when the vest is worn.

For a reversible vest, you may or may not want to do this.

If a bit of one of the layers shows on one of the sides, it may look like narrow piping. You are the designer. Create the look you want.

Stitch the vests armhole edges together using short stitches (18-20 stitches per inch) all the way.

Sandwich press these seams.

Press the seams open.

Trim the armhole seams to 1/8 inch seam allowance. The short stitches will hold this seam.

If this is a lined vest, understitch the armhole seams and all of the other seams as well. If it is reversible, you may not want the understitching to show on the edge.

Sewing Tip: Always use short stitches and trim to 1/8 inch seam allowance to stitch a curve. Then understitch if possible. It produces a much cleaner, sharper curve instead of trimming to 1/4 inch and clipping. Try it!

After the armholes are finished, place the two right sides of the vest back together again lining up all the edges. Pin to hold the layers.

Stitch the front and neckline together.

Begin stitching about 2 inches from the side seam on the bottom of the front and stitch across the bottom of the front, up the center front and around the neck and down on the other side of the front stopping about 2 inches from the other side seam.

Use a regular stitch length to stitch across the bottom of the front and up the front. Change to a short stitch length to stitch the curve around the neck.

Sandwich press the seam.

Press the seam open.

Trim the curved area around the neck to 1/8 inch.

Trim the rest of the seam to 1/4 inch.

Hold the scissors at an angle when you trim to help layer or grade the seam allowances or use "duckbill" scissors to help do this.

Sewing Tip: Always stagger the edges of seam allowances when they end up laying on top of each other in a finished garment.

Turn the vest right side out by pulling the fronts through the shoulders one side at a time.

Press well setting the seam lines exactly on the edge.

With right sides together, match the armhole seams and pin exactly through the stitching line to hold one on top of the other.

Stitch the side seams of both layers in one continuous step carefully walking the needle over the underarm pin.

Sandwich press the seam.

Press the seam open.

You may want to leave the full seam allowance here in case you have to let the vest out sometime.

Now, you have the bottom of the back open and about 2 inches on either side of the side seam toward the front.

Turn right sides together matching up the side seams. Put a pin exactly in the line of stitching in the side seams to hold one on top of the other.

Starting at one front side where you stopped stitching previously, stitch across the bottom until you come to about 2 inches from the next side seam pin and stop leaving about a 4 inch opening on that side.

Sandwich press the seam.

Press the seam open.

Press under the unstitched seam allowances as though they were stitched.

Trim and grade the seam allowances to about 1/4 inch.

Turn the vest right side out through the 4 inch opening at the side lower edge. This opening is better than having the opening in the middle of the center back. It isn't as noticeable.

Press well again.

At the opening, turn in and line up the edges.

To finish this opening, slip stitch it closed by hand or place a narrow strip of fusible web and fuse it closed.

If desired, topstitch the vest 1/4 inch from the edges.

Make buttonholes on both sides of the vest.

Sew 2 buttons together making a thread shank in between them. Use these double buttons through both buttonholes like cuff links. You can even use 2 different buttons as
long as they are the same size to fit through the holes.

Method II

Another method to finish your reversible vest is to sew each vest with shoulder seams and side seams.

Place the vests with wrong sides together.

Stitch 3/4 inch all around the armholes and the outer edges of the vest holding the 2 layers together.

Trim off 5/8 inch all around.

Bind all the outside edges either with self fabric, contrasting fabric, or a fold over trim or braid to finish. You can even use a decorative serged edge to finish the vest.

This is fast and easy!

It's your choice. You are the designer!

Enjoy your vest!

It just makes sense!

6 Game Of Thrones Halloween Costume Ideas

The Game of Thrones TV series has really taken off in the past year. It features a huge range of unique characters, which means that there are many, many costume options available to you if you choose this theme. Here are six of the most notable.

Kids Toy Chest

Eddard "Ned" Stark

Kids Toy Chest

Ned Stark is one of the most famous characters from the Game of Thrones TV series, and one of the most popular Halloween costume choices for men. His clothing is simple in color, but complex in its detail. He wears a brown leather tunic with a holder for his sword. Over the top he often wears a thick fur cloak to keep warm as winter draws ever closer.

Catelyn Stark

If your significant other is going as Ned Stark, why not choose the Catelyn Stark costume for yourself? Catelyn usually wears her hair half up, half down, and her outfit matches her husband's in many ways. She wears simple, natural-colored dresses underneath a thick fur coat.

Khal Drogo

If you've got the physique for it then why not be brave and go as the huge Khal Drogo this Halloween? Drogo dwarfs pretty much anyone standing near him, both in terms of height and muscle size! Khal has a distinctive long braid down his back, showing just how fierce a warrior he is. Aside from this he walks around with a bear chest (with a deep tan), a thick brown leather waist belt, a belt over his hips made up of horse medallions and brown pants.

Khaleesi

Daenerys Targaryen reluctantly married Khal to become Khaleesi of the Dothraki people. Her distinguishing feature is her long blond hair. Other than this she can be seen wearing typical Dothraki clothing - a brown, cropped woven shirt, a similarly colored long skirt, brown short gloves and a number of belts around the waist.

The Night's Watch

Another Game of Thrones Halloween costume idea is to go as a man of the Night's Watch. It's cold where they are, so they're known to wear thick black coats complete with black fur, black boots, a cloak and a sword.

Queen Cersei

If you'd rather go as an evil queen this Halloween then Cersei could be the character for you. Her hair is one of her most notable features - it's extremely long and is usually left down. If you want to get the real Game of Thrones look then tie your hair half up in some wonderfully detailed, medieval style complete with a crown! For the clothing, a long medieval gown will do, as long as it has a regal quality.

3 Essential Steps to Organizing a Small Closet

Is your closet in shambles? Are your clothes taking over your closet? Are you at a loss about what to do to tidy things up and get things back on track? If so, then I've got some tips that I think will solve the problem. So sit back, relax and go through these steps with me to find the solution to your small closet trials and tribulations...

Kids Toy Chest

Step 1: Clean up and Clear out

Kids Toy Chest

If your closet is in shambles, the first thing you need to do is a major clean-up. Closets don't clean themselves, they need to be cleaned every once and awhile. So, a good place to start is to simply take everything out of the closet.

Once you've done that, sort through your items items and get rid of things that you may no longer need and donate them to charity. Once you've initially cleaned up and cleared everything out, to keep things under control it is recommended that you do an inventory check and occasional clean-up every 3 to 6 months.

Or if that doesn't work for you, consider using the "Replacement Strategy" instead.

It's a simple method of keeping your closet up to par every time you go shopping. This will help you keep a steady flow going rather than having to wonder if you're once again cramming too much in your small space as time progresses.

This is also very helpful if you shop a lot. It will keep quantity-in and quantity-out consistent. To make this strategy work, let's use an example of how it's done...

Let's say one day you're ready to go shopping. Before you go shopping, it's vital to go through your closet and find a certain number of clothing that you're no longer happy with. Once you've gone through your closet, let's say found 2 pair of pants and 3 shirts that you're ready to get rid of. The next step is to then go shopping for the equal amount of clothing that you plan to toss out or donate. In this case, it's 2 pair of pants and 3 shirts.

During your time out shopping, your job is simple. All you have to do is find 2 new pair of pants and 3 shirts that you'd like to REPLACE your old clothing with. And that's it. Simple, huh? But let's not forget. You have one last thing to do once you're done shopping...

And that's to simply drop off the old clothing at the thrift store and then you're finished for the day.

So if it's not clear by now, you're basically replacing the old with the new. This is a simple method that will help you keep things tidy as well as help you maintain a certain shopping budget whenever you're ready to add something new to your wardrobe.

Step 2: Create Your Own Closet System

If you have a small closet that is just overflowing with clothes, even after you've done a major clean-up, you might want to consider several options on doubling your space. You can get a complete closet system, but often this requires that you remove your current closet system and put a new one in. And if you're renting a place, you know this is definitely off-limits.

So what do you do when you need a closet system but can't put one in?

Well, you turn to closet organizers to get the job done.

They can be just as effective as a complete closet system and all you have to do is hang them up on the closet rod that's already in your closet. All it takes is a few moments and voila... you have your own makeshift closet system.

To do this, you will simply need...

Closet doublers Hanging shelves and drawers Hanging shoe organizers

StacksandStacks.com is a great place to find the organizers that you'll need to achieve this look.

The great thing about closet doublers is that they do exactly what they say. They double your space by utilizing the unused space blow your clothes, so you essentially have two hanging spots instead of one.

Hanging shelves and drawers offer you a big advantage because they allow you to eliminate your need for a dresser or chest of drawers. And this can be extremely helpful if you have a small bedroom but can't afford the room for a dresser.

With the hanging shelves and drawers, you can store all of your undergarments in them, such as socks, underwear, bras and so forth. And if they're big enough, you can even store your purses in them too. If not, they make organizers that you can hang up for those as well.

Hanging shoe organizers are also self-explanatory. If you don't want your shoes lying around all over the place, get a hanging shoe organizer that will get the job done.

Once you have all of these organizers, consider placing the hanging shelf and shoe organizer in the center of your closet and a closet doubler on each end. However, before you jump the gun, be certain your closet can accommodate a hanging shelf, shoe organizer and 2 doublers. If not, you might need to eliminate one of the doublers or organizers.

Step 3: Don't Just Guess... Label It!

Once you've gotten rid of everything you don't want in your closet and you've gotten your organizers in place, you might want to consider one last (optional) step to take care of business...

And that's closet dividers.

TheContainerStore.com has great blank closet dividers that you can use to achieve this great look and feel.

You can use them to label your clothes...

By season By type Or simply by style

...and they'll help you know exactly where each section begins and ends.

For instance, if you organize all of your long-sleeve shirts together, you could put a label up that says "Long-sleeve Shirts." Or if you prefer, you could place all of your formal clothing together and create a label that says "Formal Clothing."

But what if you enjoy organizing your clothing by season? Well, obviously you could do that too. Simply create four labels in accordance with the four seasons of the year: spring, summer, winter and fall.

This will eliminate guesswork and each day you'll be able to quickly go to what you need section by section.

Once you've done all 3 of those steps, you'll have a small organized closet you can take pride in. And from then on out keeping it tidy will be a breeze. Simply tidy up every 3 to 6 months or use the "Replacement Strategy" to keep quantity-in and quantity-out flow on par.

Who knew it could be so simple, right?

Easy (and Fun) Craft Projects For Boys

Girls seem to be naturally attracted to arts and crafts, but boys are sometimes a different matter. If you're running a summer camp, holding a crafts party or just want to get your sons involved in a neat project, you may be scratching your head when it comes to craft ideas. Fortunately, there are several categories of crafts that attract boys of all ages.

Kids Toy Chest

Nature Crafts

Kids Toy Chest

Nature crafts are a good choice for boys. This allows them to go out into the wilderness and gather the materials.

A great nature craft idea is "Forest Friends." These crafts are easy to make and will allow the boys to work off some of that excess energy. Take them to the park and ask them to gather leaves, twigs and pinecones.

When you return back home from the park, let the boys decorate their finds with googly eyes and puff balls. Use Gorilla Glue or another multi-purpose glue that will adhere to the natural surfaces. Make faces on the leaves and pinecones, and then attach the twigs for bodies. You can make limbs from construction paper and the boys will have nature-inspired puppets to play with for the rest of the day.

Character Crafts

Boys like creating crafts that help them pretend they are their favorite heroes and characters. Pirates are very popular these days, so any pirate-related crafts will be well received. You can provide the supplies to make a construction paper or sewn felt eye patches, depending on the age of the boys.

Every pirate needs a parrot, so there's another simple craft idea. Use old toilet paper tubes, feathers and markers so each boy can have a personal parrot sidekick. Boys will also enjoy making treasure chests from old shoeboxes and treasure maps to find their loot from paper bags and markers.

Science Crafts.

If you have an older group of boys to entertain with crafts, don't underestimate the power of science-themed crafts. These crafts are part science experiment, part craft. One example of a science themed craft is invisible writing. For this craft, you'll need a laxative tablet, one tablespoon of rubbing alcohol, cotton balls and ammonia.

Crush the tablet into a container and then add the alcohol. Have the boys use paintbrushes to create their secret messages. As the ink dries, it will disappear. To see the message, simple have them rub the pieces of paper with cotton balls soaked in ammonia. It's not the most pleasant smelling craft, but it sure is a lot of fun!

As long as you keep boys active and engaged, they'll have as much fun with crafts as girls do. Although they aren't patient enough for beaded lanyards, they have activities and interests that can engage them just as much. So before you assume that boys and crafts just don't mix, try some of these ideas.

1980 Halloween Costumes You Will Definitely Love

People who frequent Halloween parties are usually the type who love dressing up in different costumes and be able to take on a different character for the night. From witches to floating White Ladies and gremlins, indeed, Halloween parties serve the purpose of bringing out in you the creativeness and imagination that you have.

Kids Toy Chest

Just like any other themed parties, Halloween parties have mostly welcomed 1980 costumes despite their brash colors and spandex-full styles. Most fashion experts often label the 80s style as horrible; however, there are numerous 1980 costumes that prove otherwise.

Kids Toy Chest

Most of the costumes from the 80s were greatly inspired the music which dominated the era and artists like Adam Ant, Madonna, Michael Jackson and Prince. But, this article will instead feature and discuss the different 1980 costumes and fancy dresses that have been particularly stirred by iconic and popular films during the 80s.

There are also some popular 80s movies with characters that are easily recognizable, such as the Return of the Jedi, E.T., Back to the Future, Indiana Jones and many more. If you are taking into consideration dressing up as a particular character from a 80s blockbuster film, then you shouldn't have much of a problem coming up with the best Halloween 1980 costume for your party.

Below are three of the most popular iconic characters that dominated the film industry during the 80s.

Beetlejuice Halloween Costume

Beetlejuice is a horror film that perfectly projects the title character in a fancy dress or costume. This is also one outfit that can be worn on a Halloween party as it accordingly suits the theme of the fete. The Beetlejuice outfit is composed of a striped white jacket and a pair of white and black striped trousers. And what would be the perfect accessory for this awesome and mind-boggling 1980s costume? None other than the Beetlejuice wig. To make this popular outfit more appealing and effective, try to consider applying the Beetlejuice make-up and teeth in order to entirely complete the outfit.

Robocop Costume

There are movies which specifically feature lead characters that are appropriate for 1980 costumes and fancy dresses such as the case of Robocop. The official Robocop get-up includes a two-piece jet black jumpsuit and attached silver EVA armor. The word, "ROBOCOP" is etched on the front of a molded and fined chest piece. The Robocop outfit is also matched with a helmet.

Ghost Buster Couple Combo

If you are planning to attend a Halloween party and would like to be caught wearing 1980 costumes with your partner or friend, then the best outfit would have to be the Ghost buster Couple Combo. Ghost Busters was one of the most influential and celebrated movies from the 80s decade and both male and female costumes can be derived from the characters in the movie. Both Ghost buster costumes are made up of Beige jumpsuits, a foam belt finished with a faux-leather top, a pair of matching hats and a pair of inflatable proton storage pack that will capture any evil ghosts.

How to Build a Toy Box

Need simple instructions on how to build a toy box? Well, we have it all here. Toys are one of the most wonderful things that kids can experience. It allows them to explore the world with an eye for endless possibilities and also opens up their mind for exploring their own talent and imagination. So with these reasons, it is very important that as parents and adults you help your kids take care of their toys by building them a toy box. Plus it also creates a safer environment for everybody else in the house when the toys are kept right where they should be.

Kids Toy Chest

First Things First on How to Create a Toy Box

Kids Toy Chest

Well, you can't just go right down to business and hammer away. The first thing you need to know on how to build a toy box is to identify the kind of toys that the kids have. You need to separate them accordingly because some toys tend to be more sensitive than the others. Some are smaller while some may take up too much space. Putting a category on the toys beforehand also allows you to make a simple inventory of the toys the kids already have.

Soon as you have your mini inventory in place, this is where the design process comes in. If you really want to build your toy box from scratch then it would help to have a design plan that you can sketch up to serve as your guide. This would also give you an idea of the materials that you will need to make building possible. You can also have someone who's more adept at building stuff look over your sketch so they can give you useful inputs on how to build a toy box.

Choosing Your Materials Wisely

Keep in mind that as much as you want the kids toy box to be creative and sturdy, you should also remember that most of the time the kids themselves would be the ones to handle it. Safety precautions should be among the top of your priorities when building one. Make sure that if you decide to use wood, the materials is properly smoothed out to avoid stubs that can injure the kids hands and fingers. If you will use metal, it would be best to use those that are a bit on the thin side so kids can easily carry them around.

Make sure that you also create safe joints for the box lids and sides. You can actually use ropes instead of nails. But should you use bolts and screws and other steel joints, just make sure you choose the ones that are guaranteed to be stainless. At least even if times wears out these materials they would not rust and cause a hazardous toy box for the kids to use.

Decorating the Kids' Bedroom

Home decorating can be a lot of fun, regardless of the room you're working on. If you're looking to decorate a room for children, that can be almost as fun as decorating you own room - unless, of course, the child is already overbearing in his/her opinions and feels the need to make all the choices over his/her possessions despite the fact that he/she contributes absolutely nothing financially. But here I digress.

Kids Toy Chest

One of the most important things to consider in shopping for bedroom furniture for your kids is safety. You want materials that are durable and well crafted so the stuff sticks around for Kid 2 (and god forbid, Kid 3). Find bedroom furniture that is crafted of hardwood solids, such as maple, oak, or cherry. Also be sure to examine the joints of the furniture. You want to make sure the manufacturer used proper joints. This is always important, but especially with kids' furniture. Sometimes cheap furniture works with adults, but it never lasts with kids. If the whole bed is held together with staples and glue, you know it won't last a day longer than that kid's crawling. They're small, but they're mighty - they jump on furniture and break things before they're even mobile. So unless you want to buy new bedroom furniture every fifteen minutes, you better shell out for the good stuff.

Kids Toy Chest

More often than not, the kids' room is a smaller room. And if Kid 2 comes around before you have a place to put him, you're going to find that little room squeezed for space. So when it comes to bedroom furniture for children, try to find pieces that save space. One way to save space is the bunk. Even if you only have one kid, you can put him on a bunk, and then put a little bookshelf or dresser underneath it to save space. Another way to save space is by choosing furniture that serves a double function: a toy chest/chair, a trundle bed, an armoire/bar, etc. You need to think practically. You also need to think ahead, which takes me to another point: wall colors.

Remember back in the olden days, when people didn't know what they were getting with a baby and so they didn't want to do the room pink or blue? Well, we know now what the kid will look like, but really, do we know what we're getting at the end of the day? No, we sure don't. So one lasting piece of advice: keep the walls neutral. Kids grow up so fast and go through so many different phases, and you really don't want to be catering to his/her every color whim. The colors and bedroom furniture can be neutral. That's guaranteed to last and not present an issue. All other décor comes and goes with each rising Hollywood child star's inevitable fade into vice and deprivation. So for now it's white walls with a Hannah Montana poster, and tomorrow it's white walls with someone else on a poster.

Eventually they'll be teenagers and they'll want none of this stuff, but they'll demand you buy them new bedroom furniture and they'll paint their walls whatever color they want even if you tell them not to. That's the joy of parenthood. Enjoy decorating while they're still too young to verbalize an opinion.
